What is image upscaling?

Image upscaling increases the width and height of an image and uses interpolation to calculate new pixels. It changes the real image resolution, not just the zoom level in the page.

Canvas upscaling is fast and useful for temporary enlargement, transparent PNGs, screenshots and pixel art. It is not AI super resolution and cannot recreate missing texture, hair or text detail.

For heavily blurred portraits, old photos or product images, start with a higher-resolution source or use an AI upscaler before final compression.

Use Cases

  • A small avatar, logo or screenshot needs a larger display size.
  • Product images, blog graphics or presentation assets need a bigger PNG.
  • Pixel art and retro assets need enlargement without blurred edges.
  • Transparent stickers, logos and UI assets need scaling before layout work.
  • A print draft needs a quick resolution check before using AI or finding a larger source.

How to Use

  1. Upload a JPG, PNG, WEBP or another common image file.
  2. Choose 2x, 3x or 4x scaling.
  3. Turn smoothing on or off based on the image type.
  4. Review the preview and download the PNG result.

Features

  • 2x, 3x and 4x scaling for common screen, layout and print needs.
  • Smoothing toggle: keep photos soft or preserve hard pixel-art edges.
  • Transparent PNG output keeps alpha channels for logos, stickers and UI assets.
  • Local Canvas processing keeps files on your device with no server upload.
  • One-click PNG download for continued compression, cropping or publishing.

Image upscaler vs AI upscaler vs resize tool

Each option changes image dimensions, but each solves a different problem.

Best Practices

Start with 2x

2x already creates four times as many pixels and often covers display or light print needs; jumping to 4x can create blur and large files.

Turn smoothing off for pixel art

Disabling smoothing keeps square edges intact for pixel art, bitmap icons and retro game assets.

Crop before upscaling

Cropping first avoids enlarging useless borders and keeps the output easier to inspect.

Crop Image

Compress after download

Upscaled PNGs can be large, so compress the result before publishing, emailing or uploading.

FAQ

How do I upscale an image to 2x, 3x or 4x online?

Upload a common image file such as JPG, PNG or WEBP, choose 2x, 3x or 4x, and the browser redraws the image on a larger canvas so you can download a PNG result.

Will upscaling make a blurry image truly sharp?

No. Browser interpolation adds pixels from existing pixels; it cannot restore details that were never in the source. For severely blurry photos, AI super resolution or a higher-resolution original is a better path.

Should I enable smooth interpolation?

Enable smoothing for photos, screenshots and product images. Turn it off for pixel art, bitmap icons and retro game assets when you want crisp square edges.

Does transparent background stay transparent?

Yes. The output is PNG, so alpha transparency from logos, stickers and UI assets is preserved after upscaling.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The file is read, drawn and downloaded inside your browser, which makes the tool suitable for private screenshots, unpublished designs and copyrighted assets.

Why did the output file become larger?

Upscaling increases the number of pixels. PNG files can grow quickly, so compress the result afterward if you need a smaller file for web, email or chat.

Glossary

Interpolation
A mathematical way to estimate new pixels from nearby existing pixels during enlargement.
Nearest neighbor
A hard-edge sampling style similar to smoothing off; good for pixel art, harsh for photos.
Alpha channel
The transparency channel in PNG images. It is preserved when transparent images are upscaled and downloaded as PNG.
DPI / PPI
Pixel density for print or screens. Upscaling adds pixels, but it does not guarantee new printable detail.
AI super resolution
A model-based upscaling method that predicts texture and detail. This tool uses local Canvas interpolation instead.
